Custom Designing Business Logos For Construction Firms

The construction sector is growing more and more competitive. More prominent organizations handle the larger development jobs while smaller and newer companies must demonstrate their quality with numerous subcontracts before moving on to bigger projects.

My design company has just been presented an assignment to create a new construction logo design for a local construction firm. To kick off the assignment, the art director and I paid a visit to our client’s office for a brief interview session to learn more about the company.

Like many other companies we have surveyed, most companies are aware they need a new outlook to help them compete but are not quite sure what they want. That is where our services come in handy.

Before starting on the logo design, we commonly inquire about the history of the company, its turnover, its goals, its specialty, its target market and why it wants a new construction logo design; just to get a better feel of things.

We discovered that they are a relatively young company, 8 years in the business with 4 big subcontract projects and many minor ones under their belts, each one larger than the last. They are now preparing to adopt a blue ocean strategy and venture into eco-friendly medium cost suburban development – a niche with hardly any competitors – and thus seizing the opportunity to build a reputation for themselves as one of the first names to engage this niche.

From the interview, we can gather that they have the needed resources to take on medium scale development projects. Their chosen niche has rendered it much easier to differentiate them from other developers.

At our agency, we had a little brainstorming session and and decided on the concept we would finally adopt. Following that we assigned 4 designers to produce individual interpretations or logo samples to turn those creative ideas to logo designs.

After a few days, the initial designs were ready for show. Some designs made use of stylized text while others used construction related graphics like hardhats and countersink bits to get the point across. Even though all 4 construction logo design samples were unique in their own way, they all kept to to 2 main points.

Professionalism
Developers deal with big money projects. In order to be awarded such projects, they must always be regarded as a professional and responsible corporate citizen with admirable business ethics. Therefore, the neat and clear designs reflected that well.

Eco-Friendliness
This is the niche this company has set out to penetrate. Needless to say, the designs, either by color or graphics, further impresses the company’s commitment to the preservation of the environment.

Finally it is up to our clients to make a decision on the designs. Alternatively they can make minor alterations but as professional designers, we must make sure that the design in the end keeps to the key points expressed earlier.
