The iPhone’s Touch Screen: Pros and Cons

By Jerry J. Jansen On June 12, 2009 Under Uncategorized

The iPhone is one of the best inventions in the gadget world. One of the key features of the Apple iPhone is its touch screen, which helps users to navigate through a web page very easily, flick pages and tap on an iPhone web application to open its interface. However, iPhone’s touch screen has some issues, particularly when you type in an email message with a virtual keyboard. First let us see why iPhone’s virtual keyboard is better than physical keyboard. It is evident that a virtual keyboard is a unique part of a touch screen phone, thanks to some very good iPhone programming but, in the case of physical keyboard, it becomes very difficult to press those tiny tangible keys to write a message.

Such is not the case with a virtual one as it requires the lightest touch to enter alphabets. However, the key problem lies with the amount of screen space a virtual keyboard uses when typing a message. Technically speaking, iPhone’s screen resolution is 320×480 as it has a portrait orientation by default. When you type an email, the vertical space shrinks, allowing you to key in few lines of text.

Well, tangible keyboards have the upper hand in this aspect. Unlike a physical keyboard, a virtual one steals half of the screen. However, the iPhone touch screen has many other good features. When a user rotates the phone in 90 degrees, iPhone’s smart motion sensor detects this automatically and rotates the direction of the screen in the same way. Users just have to navigate through a web page and hold the phone in a vertical direction, then rotate it 90 degrees horizontally, the sensor will automatically refresh and change into a horizontal orientation. With such great interface, interactive iPhone web apps and nice features, the iPhone is certainly a great innovation in the smart gadget field, thanks to the dedication, hard work and technological expertise of a iPhone developer.
